A Photographer in British India
By Hugh Rayner
John Edward Saché was one of the more important and prolific professional photographers working in mid nineteenth century India. From the mid 1860’s through until his death in 1882, he operated a variety of studios, in towns across northern India, and in that time, produced well over 1000 fine topographical views, architectural and portrait studies. This booklet documents his life and work; illustrated with a range of newly discovered portraits of him, pictures of his studios, and personal photographs of his wife and family; as well as an extensive catalogue, listing over 500 of his published topographical photographs.
